NEWS

The María Merced Williams and John Rains House in Rancho Cucamonga offers a window into the region’s 19th-century roots.

Built in 1860 with local red clay bricks and tar from the Brea Pits, the home became the centerpiece of the Rains family estate after they moved in during 1861.

John Rains’s pioneering winery made the site famous for lively gatherings and hospitality.

Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973, the house now welcomes visitors as part of the San Bernardino County Museum system.

Recent improvements were celebrated with a ribbon-cutting in April 2024, following the site’s renaming in honor of both María Merced Williams and John Rains.

The public can visit from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and admission is free.

The site reflects Rancho Cucamonga’s journey from its early Native American roots through agricultural beginnings to a vibrant city.
